What to Expect from Therapy

In our initial assessment, we will decide which model of therapy will be most helpful to you at the time.  I will ask you to think about some goals for our work together as I want to make sure that the therapy you are having feels useful and constructive.

In the initial phase of therapy, we will work to understand how your difficulties developed and what is keeping your problems going. We then have a roadmap for where you need to make changes. We will work together to find ways of implementing those changes, and learning techniques to help manage your mental health. You will have an increased awareness of unhelpful patterns that have developed, and understand how to break out of those patterns in future. You will be able to use these new ways of thinking and taking care of yourself long after the therapy has finished.

My approach emphasises the importance of helping yourself through self-reflection and work in between therapy sessions, which reinforces the work we do together. We will regularly review symptoms of anxiety and depression, to monitor your mood and review the progress of our work.

Both CBT and IPT have a good evidence base and are recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence. CBT is typically advised to last between 12 and 20 sessions, IPT is recommended as a course of 16 sessions. On-going therapy sessions are recommended weekly, and will take place at the same time each week. Sessions take place online via MS teams video link.
